Healthy soil is the foundation of healthy, resilient fruit trees. In this one-hour workshop, community orchard stewards will explore how building soil health can reduce pest and disease pressure and support long-term orchard success. We’ll cover the basics of soil fertility—what trees need, how to read soil cues, and simple ways to improve soil using organic and low-input practices that work in community orchard settings.
The workshop will also introduce practical Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, with an emphasis on prevention and observation rather than reaction. Participants will learn how soil health connects to tree immunity, how to encourage beneficial insects through habitat and organic management practices, and when (and when not) to intervene. Stewards will leave with approachable, actionable tools they can use right away to support healthier trees, fewer pest issues, and more productive community orchards.
